about

The Winning Bid

After working tirelessly to raise more funds, the Trust submitted their third bid of £300,000 on the 4th December - they knew this would have to be their final offer. After an anxious four day wait, Simon Fraser was informed by the selling agent that the Trust had been successful with the words, “it looks like we have a deal”*. As the news spread through the estate, the sense of euphoria felt by the crofters and many others was said to be indescribable. At last, victory for the crofters of Assynt.
That night a celebration took place in Stoer school. The atmosphere was buzzing with elated crofters, press and supporters, as Allan MacRae addressed the room saying:

“Well, ladies and gentlemen, it seems we have won the land.”*

The Assynt Crofters’ Trust officially became the legal owner of the North Assynt Estate on the 1st February 1993.
